Agents Recover 280 Grams Of Marijuana At Detroit-Windsor Tunnel
DETROIT (WWJ) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers at the Detroit Windsor Tunnel found approximately 280 grams of marijuana in the center console of a vehicle arriving from Canada on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, June 7, Wayne Monk, a 32-year-old Canadian citizen and U.S. resident from Madison Heights, was returning from what he told officers was a lunch date in Windsor with his sister.
Monk told the inspecting officer that he was not bringing anything back from Canada, but the officer decided to refer Monk for further inspection of his vehicle.
Officers conducting the search noticed a strong odor in the car of what they believed was marijuana.
"Monk admitted that he frequently smoked marijuana in his car. During their search, they found a couple of vacuum-sealed bags in the center console of his car," said Chief Ken Hammond with U.S. Border Patrol and Protection.
Field testing of the substance resulted in a positive reaction for marijuana. The two bags contained approximately 280 grams, less than a pound, of marijuana.
"It was a unique concealment. There's a heater button, and he pried that out and there was a natural void under there and he stuck those bags underneath it," Hammond said.
Monk was arrested and turned over to Task Force Agents for further investigation.
