Officer Wounded, Suspect Killed In Exchange Of Gunfire

WARREN (WWJ) - Police say one person was killed and an officer was shot during an exchange of gunfire in Warren.

Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Ron Dewey said dozens of evidence markers surrounded the front of a house at the corner of Paige and Memphis, just off 9 Mile between Van Dyke and Mound.

Warren Police Commissioner Jere Green said officers got a call around 1:45 am Tuesday about a man with a gun inside the home.

"He reportedly was holding one of the residents at gunpoint, he had a gun to his head," said Green.

When officers arrived at the home, Green said the suspect, a 53-year-old Downriver man, came out onto the front porch, produced a semi-automatic handgun and started firing at police.

"Officers returned fire and the suspect is deceased. Our evidence techs have confirmed that two shots were fired from the suspect's gun," he said.

One officer, a 35-year-old who was wearing a bullet-proof vest, was shot by the suspect.

"The officer is okay, he's in stable condition, he received a gunshot wound to the stomach. Luckily, his vest saved him. The round was actually lodged in his vest. He was transported to the hospital and they just confirmed he has no internal injuries, but he will be admitted," said Green.

Investigators are now questioning three people as they try to piece together exactly what happened.

"We're still trying to develop the relationship between the two persons that lived at that home, the deceased and then a third-party, a female that fled on foot when officers arrived. She was apprehended. All three of those persons that are in the station right now being interviewed, we're trying to develop what the relationship was and how these parties came together this morning, obviously with violent results," said Green.

According to a police statement, it appears the original 911 call stemmed from a dispute between the residents of the home and the 21-year-old female, who was from downriver area.

Multiple officers were involved in the shooting and they will all be placed on administrative leave, said Green, as is common procedure.

Names of those involved were not immediately released.
