Off-Duty Trooper Dies After I-75 Medical Emergency
FLINT (WWJ) - Michigan State Police say an off-duty trooper has died after apparently having a medical emergency while driving on I-75 near Flint.
According to police, Tpr. David Stokes was driving south near the Miller Road exit around 6:30 pm Thursday, when his vehicle left the road way and came to rest in a weedy area along the expressway. Stoke reportedly suffered a medical emergency, perhaps a heart attack.
Stokes was transported to the hospital where attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. The incident remains under investigation by the Flint Township Police Department.
In a statement, Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, director of the MSP, said Stokes' dedication to service will be his legacy.
Stokes, a 14-year veteran of the Flint Post, received the department's Bravery Award in 1999, Lifesaving Award in 2008 and Unit Citation in 2008. He leaves behind a wife and three children.
