Obama Signs Ban On Asian Carp Importation
President Obama is bringing some help to Michigan and other states hoping to keep Asian carp out of the Great Lakes.
Mr. Obama has signed into law a ban on bringing bighead carp into the U.S. The measure adds the fish to a list of wildlife that cannot be imported or transported across state lines.
Bighead is one of two Asian carp species threatening to swim from Chicago shipping locks into Lake Michigan, where it's feared the voracious fish will gobble up everything in sight, threatning the Great Lakes sport fishing industry. Silver carp are already on the banned list.
Michigan and four other states recently lost a federal court decision seeking to close the Chicago waterways. The U.S. Supreme Court has rebuffed Michigan twice in the past.
