Oakland University Student Was Drunk When Pickup Plunged From Unfinished Overpass
MADISON HEIGHTS (WWJ/AP) - A 21-year-old Oakland University senior was legally drunk when he drove a pickup off a freeway overpass north of Detroit.
The Oakland County Medical Examiner's office determined Cody Petzold's blood alcohol content was .22 when he was killed early Friday morning in Madison Heights, The Detroit News reported. That's nearly three times the legal limit to drive in Michigan, which is .08.
Authorities have said Petzold drove around two construction barricades on the westbound 12 Mile Road ramp to southbound I-75. The truck fell 20 feet and landed on its roof.
Petzold, an honor student at Oakland University, suffered head injuries and died on impact. A passenger was injured.
The interstate entrance ramp has been closed for the past few months due to construction. Part of the overpass is being rebuilt because of an accident in October.
