Oakland County Teen Killed In ORV Crash At Silver Lake State Park
MEARS, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say an Oakland County teenager was killed an off-road vehicle accident at Silver Lake State Park in West Michigan.
Nineteen-year-old Cody J. Mong, of Oakland Township, was riding quads with a group of friends on the park's sane dunes Thursday evening in Oceana County when the accident happened.
According to a police report, the group was driving four quads in a line, following behind each other one-by-one. Somewhere along the way, Mong, who was the third driver in the line, nose-dived into an embankment at the bottom of a hill and was ejected from his vehicle.
The quad that was following directly behind him then became airborne after a jump and landed on top on Mong, police said. The driver in that vehicle was airlifted to a hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, while Mong was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sheriff's Lt. Craig Mast told The Muskegon Chronicle that it was the first time the four riders had been to Silver Lake State Park, located along Lake Michigan, which may have contributed to the accident.
Names of other individuals involved were not released.
The crash remains under investigation.
