Novi House Fire Leaves Elderly Man In Critical Condition
NOVI (WWJ) - A wheelchair-bound man suffered serious injuries following a fire at his home in Novi Tuesday night.
The husband and wife who lived at the home on Wintergreen, south of Ten Mile Road, were reportedly praying with candles in one of the rooms when the woman went to the drugstore. When she returned around 8 p.m., the house was engulfed flames and fire was quickly spreading through the entire structure.
Firefighters arrived to the woman screaming that her husband, who is bound to a wheelchair, was still inside the house. Fire crews were able to save the man, who was immediately transferred to the University of Michigan Burn Center in Ann Arbor.
At one point, firefighters had to retreat from the burning building. They managed to escape just before a portion of the house collapsed. At least one firefighter suffered smoke inhalation from the fire.
While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, authorities believe candles are the likely cause.
