Novi Area Home To Many Affected By Earthquake In Japan
NOVI (WWJ) - Lots of concern in the Novi Community School District about the earthquake in Japan, with more than 1,700 Japanese and Japanese-American students in the district.
Superintendent Peter Dion says many are worried about family in that area.
Dion sent a note to school staff asking them to be sensitive to students whose families may have been affected by the earthquake. He says many students are in the Novi school district for a few years, then move back to Japan.
Many of their parents work in the auto industry.
Noriko Rosen teaches Japanese in Novi High School "I asked all of my Japanese students...two students are from the Tokyo area and they are really worried," says Rosen.
Rosen who is originally from Nogia, left twenty-five years ago, but still has family in Japan, says she has been letting students use computers to find out about what has been happening.
They have been talking to their friends who went back to visit and vacation who can't get back home because of the situation.
Rosen was referring to Tokyo Disney, which was closed because of the earthquake.
