Nissan Recalls 319,000 Cars Amid Government Pressure
DETROIT (WWJ) - Nissan is recalling 319,000 Versa sedans, amid government pressure, over a front suspension problem.
The recall covers model years 2007 through 2012 that were sold in 22 states where road salt is often used in the winter, including Michigan.
Nissan says the salt may corrode the front coil springs and eventually cause them to break. If a front coil spring fractures, it may contact the tire, possibly puncturing it and increasing the risk of a crash.
The government has received nearly 100 complaints related to the issue, which can apparently happen at any speed.
One complaint reported the passenger-side coil spring fractured while traveling at 65 miles per hour, cutting the inner sidewall of the tire. Another complaint reported the passenger-side coil spring fractured while traveling 40 miles per hour, resulting in a tire puncture and brake line failure.
Nissan will notify owners of the recalled vehicles and dealers will replace both front coil springs, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by mid-November 2015. Owners can contact Nissan with questions at 1-800-647-7261.
