New Website Allows Public Access To Detroit Crime Data

DETROIT (WWJ) - Which are the most dangerous neighborhoods in Detroit?

There's a new way for Detroiters to keep track of where crime is happening in the city.

The Detroit Police Department on Friday launched CrimeMapping.com — a website that will provide residents with information about criminal activities affecting their neighborhoods and other parts of the city.

Now, Detroiters will be able to use computers to access the information; and there's also a free, "user-friendly,"  iPhone app.

Residents will have an opportunity to learn about specific crimes, research past criminal incidents and analyze trends. Additionally, with the use of the ESRI geographic engine, citizens will be provided with what police say is the most accurate and current information available.

"This level of data sharing is not common for police departments but is effective tool in keeping the public informed and reducing crime in many areas," the department said, in a media release. "We are very excited to provide this valuable tool to our citizens as this will further enhance our community oriented policing efforts. Transparency helps build trust and the Detroit Police Department has taken the steps necessary in helping neighbors look out for each other."
