New Police Headquarters Downtown Will Save City Millions Says Bing
DETROIT (WWJ) - The Mayor delivers on his promise for a new police headquarters.
The media and others received a tour of the new $60 million Detroit Public Safety facility. C. Beth DunCombe of the Detroit Building Authority says the new headquarters should be nearly full by the middle of next month.
"We are not moving out of firehouses and precincts, that's number one, we believe basically by mid-July, this building will be pretty well occupied," said DunCombe.
Mayor Bing didn't miss the opportunity to note the budget savings for the city with the opening of the new headquarters.
"I don't want it to go unnoticed - the consolidation of all these departments means that we are going to save from our general fund about three million dollars a year. That's huge," said Mayor Bing.
When it fully opens, the over 400,000 square-foot complex will house police, fire, EMS, homeland security and a state police forensics laboratory.
