New Effort To Reduce Cancer Disparities
The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, Josephine Ford Cancer Center and Wayne State University's medical school will announce, at 11:30 a.m. Friday, a new effort to reduce cancer disparities in older blacks in the Detroit area.
A statement from the Karmanos Cancer Institute says the partnership will be funded by the National Cancer Institute and will impact access to cancer care for older, underserved African Americans and enhance their understanding of treatment options.
The National Cancer Institute reports that older blacks in the Detroit area have disproportionately higher cancer and death rates than whites in the region, as well as African Americans nationally.
Census information shows the tri-county area, including residents of Detroit, Inkster, Southfield and Pontiac, accounts for more than 71 percent of Michigan's African American population and 42 percent of the states below poverty population.
