New 'Bio-Friendly' Lighting From Jackson Firm

Jackson-based EverLast Induction Lighting has introduced a new line of lighting fixtures, called BioLume, in collaboration with the California Lighting Technology Center at the University of California Davis.

The new patent-pending lighting series is a collection of hybrid bi-level fixtures that combine light at a daylight wavelength of 5000 degrees Kelvin and amber LEDs, coupled with occupancy sensor controls.

When the area is vacant, amber-colored LEDs emit biologically friendly light. When the sensor is triggered, the induction lamp turns on to provide bright white light for enhanced security.

Typically, for 50 to 75 percent of the hours of operation the BioLume will be operating within the amber part of the spectrum at a greatly reduced intensity, away from the critical action spectrum in terms of hormonal response for humans and other mammals, reptiles, and birds.

Developed by CLTC director Michael Siminovitch, CLTC engineering director Keith Graeber and Michael Nevins, CEO of EverLast parent Full Spectrum Solutions, the BioLume series was inspired by the growing concern within the industry that certain light levels at night may result in biological disturbances or imbalances to certain species due to the hormonal stimulation that occurs with shorter wavelengths corresponding to typical high color temperature light sources.

"There is a growing body of research that indicates human circadian rhythm is greatly affected by shorter wavelengths in the visible spectrum." Siminovitch said. "These shorter wavelengths can reduce the production of melatonin, a hormone that affects sleep cycle and other physical responses."

Full Spectrum officials say the total amount of light flux entering the sky and disrupting natural wildlife in areas adjacent to the parking and area lighting complexes can have a disruptive effect on wildlife in a similar manner to what is currently being studied with humans. Due to the incorporation of EverLast Induction Lighting and amber LEDs, coupled with a bi-level occupancy sensor, the BioLume Series is a biologically friendly, energy-efficient hybrid lighting system. This new line of fixtures including a U.S. garage, U.S. shoe box, wall pack, and canopy light, will be available later this year.
