Netbook Computers Going Home With DPS Students
DETROIT (WWJ) - Some Detroit Public School students are getting the chance to bring home more than just textbooks from school.
The district purchased 40,000 Netbook computers, and some students will get to take them home.
The pilot project kicks off in six schools this week and Comcast's Gerald Smith says, through its Internet Essentials program, they're offering the service for $10.00 a month to some families.
"With the city of Detroit, for example, there's only 20-percent penetration with respect to Internet usage," Smith said. "It's our belief that Internet usage amongst students when they connect schools with home usage, it's very critical to keep the learning curve alive."
The school district says the Netbook computers are now equipped with Lojack and other safety features.
