NAACP Demands Details On DPS Budget Cuts
DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit branch of the NAACP has filed a request to view state documents surrounding proposed cuts in the Detroit Public Schools and school funding across Michigan.
Official from the civil rights organization are seeking records from the city's public schools about the district's reorganization plan, and from Governor Rick Snyder's office.
NAACP General Counsel Butch Hollowell told WWJ the cuts in Detroit planned by the state-appointed Emergency Financial Manager would have a devastating affect.
"Experts are indicating that there would be 60 students in a classroom, as a result. That is completly unacceptable. And, we believe, illigal," he said.
Hollowell said the Detroit district is not doing a good enough job with education as it is, even before the cuts.
DPS Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb wants to close a number of schools and turn others into charters.
