Multi-Mile Traffic Backup On Eastbound I-696 Clears
ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - (Update 6 p.m.) Traffic is still slow in the area but the accident has cleared.
Afternoon commuters are riding the brakes on I-696 Monday, as a multi-vehicle accident has led to a multi-mile backup.
Reporting live from above the scene in Chopper 950, WWJ's Lance Howard said the crash, along eastbound I-696 just before I-75, involved a box truck, a semi truck and at least two other vehicles.
Only the two right lanes are open allowing motorists to get by -- albeit slowly. The 696 ramp to I-75 also remains open.
As of 5:15 p.m., traffic was backed up from at least Telegraph Road, causing slowdowns all the way back to Orchard Lake Road.
Howard suggests commuters that typically use 696 east to get home to consider using a mile road to get around the mess.
