MTV Films Royal Oak School Event

A local high school is getting national attention for its efforts to help fight bullying, stereotypes, and labels.

MTV crew came to Royal Oak to film Challenge Day, an event that aims to bring together students from different backgrounds like the student council member, the jock, the class clown, the choir kid, and the emo kid.

WWJ's Greg Bowman spoke with a student who shared her experience with bullying.

"I do get picked on at school, get thrown in garbage cans, and it doesn't help when the girls spread rumors," she said.

Although the smoke and mirrors of MTV will make the Challenge Day event look like a quick fix, Royal Oak School Superintendent Thomas Moline explained the depth of the program.

"It looked like Challenge Day had come to Royal Oak for the first time and made a miraculous change in about six hours, and that's not the way it works," he said.

Moline stressed that the fact that the program has made "a difference in (the) hallways, and in between passing and during lunch hours" is a testament to past five years of running the two-day program in both middle school and high school.
