Mother Killed, Daughter Injured In Crash With Stolen Vehicle
OAK PARK (WWJ) - A woman is dead and her 15-year-old daughter left in serious condition after a stolen car blew through a red light and crashed into their vehicle in Oak Park.
On Thursday, police responded to the Northgate Apartments on a report of a stolen vehicle. A Berkley Public Safety Officer monitoring the area of Coolidge and 11 Mile saw the stolen vehicle and attempted to stop it.
When the suspect refused to stop, the officer pursued the vehicle until Lincoln Avenue. Police say the pursuit was then called off due to high speeds reached by the suspect.
The suspect continued southbound on Coolidge until Oak Park Boulevard, where he entered the intersection on a red light and struck the innocent motorists who had entered the intersection.
The impact caused death of the passenger, 48-year-old Bernadine Lytle, and serious injuries to the 15-year-old driver, both of Oak Park. The daughter, who was legally driving on a graduated license, was transported to an area hospital where she was listed in critical but serious condition.
The driver of the stolen vehicle, 38-year-old Robert Curtis-Bill Denham from Detroit, was arrested at the scene and transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Denham, charged with murder, is being held without bond. He faces a June 21 court hearing followed by a June 23 preliminary examination.
