More Than A Decade In The Making, Troy Transit Center Officially Opens

TROY (WWJ) - The opening of a new transportation hub in Troy will make getting to your destination a little more convenient.

A ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday for the Troy Multi-Modal Transit Center announced the opening to the public.

The transit center is located just south off Maple road west of Coolidge Highway, behind an outdoor mall, and offers passenger rail service, regional bus routes and taxi services.

Troy Mayor Dane Slater says the center is a link to the future -- when we'll have mass transit options in Metro Detroit.

"There's a vision, it's going to take some time but this is the start, this is a hub, this is going to be a part of a connecting of all of the transportation - this is a multi-modal transportation center. In some way we will connect - it might not be exactly today, but that's the future."

Slater says it will be a huge boost for the local economy.

"Yes, it's everything, it's a reinvestment in the area, it enhances the area - it brings jobs, it brings business, it's not only for Troy - it's for Oakland County and it's for the region."

Slater says increasing the community's connectedness is a priority.

The city initially planned for the project in 2000 and approved a smaller version of the center in 2012.

The $6.3 million transit center replaces a platform station in Birmingham and is one of three new stations that will open in Michigan this year, according to Amtrak.
