More Money For Detroit Light Rail
The Detroit public relations firm Berg Muirhead has issued invitations to an appearance in Detroit by U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood next week.
According to area media reports and posts on area Internet forums, he'll come with gifts -- $25 million for the Woodward light rail project.
Both Crain's Detroit Business, quoting the Web forum site DetroitYes.com, and the Detroit News, quoting Richard "Rip" Rapson, Kresge Foundation president. have mentioned the amount.
The event is to take place Monday at 10 a.m. at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Also on the guest list is Peter M. Rogoff, administrator of the Federal Transit Administraiton.
The money would help toward the $125 million cost of a proposal by the city and a private investor group called M1Rail to run light rail from Hart Plaza to the New Center area up Woodward Avenue. A $300 million second phase would extend it to Eight Mile Road.
