Monica Conyers Out Of Prison After 27 Months
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Former Detroit City Council President Monica Conyers has been released from a federal prison in West Virginia where she served a sentence for bribery.
Officials say Conyers was released Thursday from the Alderson Federal Prison Camp, which is often referred to as "Camp Cupcake," and transferred to a halfway house where she will live for a period before being granted freedom. It is a common step.
Prisons spokesman Edmond Ross says Conyers can work or look for a job while staying at the halfway house. She entered prison in 2010 after pleading guilty in 2009 to taking bribes while on the Detroit council.
Conyers, the wife of Democratic U.S. Rep. John Conyers of Detroit, was sentenced to 37 months in prison -- but federal inmates typically can trim their time with good behavior.
