MLB Pitcher, Dearborn Native Arrested For DUI
ATLANTA (WWJ) - Atlanta Braves star pitcher Derek Lowe, a Dearborn native, was arrested and charged with drunken driving Thursday night.
A Georgia State Patrol spokesman said a trooper stopped Lowe's vehicle about 10:00 pm, after it was spotted racing another car down an Atlanta street.
An official said the trooper detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage. He administered a field sobriety test and Lowe was arrested.
Atlanta Manager Fredi Gonzales said he hopes Lowe and the team can learn from this.
"It's not good but he's going to have to go through some legal stuff that everybody goes through and hopefully some of our guys learn a lesson from it and it doesn't happen again," Gonzalez said.
Despite the arrest, Lowe will still play and the team will support him.
"He's going to start on Sunday. It's one of those things that, as a parent, a brother, a son... you know, we've all been in those situations. We don't condone it, we don't like it but we cannot also alienate him," Gonzalez said.
Lowe has been charged with DUI, reckless driving and improper lane change.
