Romney To Campaign In Lansing Tuesday
LANSING (WWJ/AP) - Republican Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney is planning to visit his native state on Tuesday.
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder will introduce the presidential candidate as he campaigns at Lansing Community College. Snyder spokeswoman Sara Wurfel said Monday the Republican governor will do the honors when Romney appears early Tuesday afternoon at Dart Auditorium on the downtown Lansing campus.
The Michigan native narrowly won the state's Feb. 28 Republican presidential primary over former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, Texas Rep. Ron Paul and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
Romney won 16 of Michigan's national convention delegates to Santorum's 14. Santorum and Gingrich have since dropped out of the race.
WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick says Romney's Michigan visit has a "secret mission."
"What the Romney people are telling everybody is, 'You know what? We're not writing off the state of Michigan,'" said Skubick. "The popular wisdom, which is often wrong, suggests that President Obama is going to do very well in Michigan. Mr. Romney, no so much.
"This visit tomorrow ... is to send a signal that Michigan is still in play. Afterall, candidates don't go to place that they know they can't win," he said.
The polls have given President Obama the decided edge in Michigan. But Romney has closed what had been a double-digit margin to the single digits over the past few months.
President Barack Obama was last in Michigan on April 18, when he attended Democratic fundraising events in Dearborn and Bingham Farms. More than 4,000 Democratic activists nominated him for a second term at party caucuses Saturday.
