Missing Troy Man's Son Denied Bond In Murder Case
TROY (WWJ) - A 21-year-old Troy man accused in the death of his still-missing father has been formally charged with murder.
Bond was denied for 21-year-old Patrick Mikes Jr., who was arraigned Thursday as police continued to search for the body of his father, 55-year-old Patrick Mikes.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Stephanie Davis reported a handcuffed Mikes Jr., dressed in his own clothes, stared straight ahead, with a blank expression and spoke softly when addressing the judge.
A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.
Police believe Mikes Jr. killed his father during a fight in the basement of their Troy home in late July. Police said an investigation shows Mikes Jr. may have driven to rural Montrose to dispose of the body before reporting Mikes Sr. missing days later.
Mikes Jr., who early on was named a person of interest in his father's disappearance, was arrested Aug. 1 after being charged with using credit cards belonging to his younger brother. He was jailed on $50,000 bond but was released when his maternal grandparents bailed him out.
His attorney has said there's "no evidence" that shows Mikes Jr., a senior at the University of Notre Dame, played a role in his father's disappearance or death.
Mike Jr. and his younger brother initially told police that their father, an avid biker, disappeared following an evening ride. The younger son is not a suspect.
