Missing Lake Michigan Swimmers From Metro Detroit
SAUGATUCK (WWJ) - The search has been suspended for two swimmers missing since Tuesday afternoon in Lake Michigan.
Missing are Bradley Alan Stoner, 22, from Livonia, last seen wearing Hawaiian-patterned swim trunks; and Daniel James Reed, 46, from Redford, last seen wearing blue swim trunks.
Witnesses said the two men were out swimming when they entered a rip current with waves four to six feet high. A third man entered the water to try to help, but was unable to reach them and was forced to return to shore.
The U.S. Coast Guard began searching the lake, near Saugatuck Dunes State Park, shortly after the pair went missing around 4:20 p.m. Tuesday. Several other agencies joined the search, which was suspended late Wednesday afternoon.
Meantime, the Coast Guard has issued a warning to swimmers and boaters of dangerous weather conditions forecasted for Lake Michigan.
The National Weather Service said mariners should be alert to changing weather conditions out on the lake on Wednesday. Forecasters said swimmers should be alert for high waves, strong currents and water spouts, which can also pose a danger on the beach.
