Military Funeral Held For Slain Homeless Flint Man
HOLLY TWP. (WWJ/AP) - A homeless man who was found beaten and slain outside a shuttered school in Flint has received a veteran's funeral, including a 21-gun salute.
A memorial service was held Monday for 57-year-old Gary Nagy at the Great Lakes National Cemetery, a military burial ground southeast of Flint in Oakland County's Holly Township.
Nagy's daughter Felicia held back tears as she told the crowd that her dad, a homeless man by choice, "always seemed to instantly become friends with everyone he met."
Felicia said Nagy will be remembered by most as a founder and resident of Tent City, an ex-homeless encampment in woods at an ex-General Motors parking lot in the Flint suburb of Burton.
Forty members of the group Patriot Riders attended the ceremony.
Nagy's body was found July 30 outside the shuttered McKinley Middle School by a bus driver who was practicing maneuvers in the school's parking lot. Police said Nagy died of head trauma.
Twenty-year-old Peris Dorsette and 15-year-old Brandon Harris, who is charged as an adult, are facing first-degree murder and torture charges in connection with Nagy's death.
