For the longest time, Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera had been touted as the best at his position. Now, the gap between him and the rest of the MLB has closed in.
CBS Sports is ranking the best players at each position as we get ready for the 2016 season. On Tuesday, the rankings for first baseman were revealed, with Cabrera coming in at No. 2.
The only player better -- Arizona's Paul Goldschmidt.
Here's writer Matt Snyder's reasoning for giving Miggy the runner-up ranking.
"For the first time in his career, Miggy missed time last season due to the disabled list. Still, in his 119 games, he qualified for the AL batting title and won it (.338), also leading the league in OBP (.440). The two-time MVP will be 33 this season and we won't likely ever see the triple crown version of him again, but he's still one of the greatest offensive forces in the game."
It's easy to see why some would think Goldschmidt has passed up Cabrera just based on his offensive production. He batted .321 with 33 home runs and 110 RBIs in 2015, while coming in second place in the National League MVP voting and winning a Gold Glove.
"If he played on a more consistent contender or a marquee team, Goldschmidt would be a household name. As it stands, he'll have to settle for sitting atop this lofty perch."
As for other Tigers on CBS Sports' position rankings, Ian Kinsler is ranked the No. 4 second baseman and Jose Iglesias is the No. 14 shortstop. Outfield rankings will be released over the weekend.
Goldschmidt seems destined to pass up Cabrera as the best first baseman in the majors at some point, but this might be a little premature.
