Even hampered by injuries for much of the season, Detroit Tigers superstar Miguel Cabrera successfully defended his title as Sporting News Player of the Year, chosen overwhelmingly with 141 votes over second-place Chris Davis, who got 35.
Cabrera finished the season batting .348/.442/.636 with an OPS of 1.078. All those numbers were the best of his 11-year career. He also tied his career high of 44 home runs and fell just two RBIs short of the 149 he hit in 2012. Cabrera put up those numbers despite hitting just .278/.395/.333 in September, mashing only one homer in that month.
The 2012 MVP improved in 2013, despite months of battling a groin injury that may require surgery. The lopsided voting in his favor for this award could be a good sign of his chances of winning MVP again this season.
If it is, Cabrera certainly looks like the favorite.
