Middle School Student Expelled For Pot Cookie
MUSKEGON (WWJ/AP) - A West Michigan student has been expelled after officials say she brought a marijuana cookie belonging to her mother to school.
The Muskegon Chronicle reports police investigated after officials at Orchard View Middle School found the cookie in December. Orchard View Schools' Superintendent Pat Walstra said the student's mother had permission to use medical marijuana.
Walstra said the student later was expelled from the Muskegon-area school and "possession of an illegal substance is not permitted on or near school."
There was no word on how school officials found out about the cookie.
Michigan's medical marijuana law has been much debated since it was approved by voters in 2008.
Marijuana can be used to alleviate the symptoms of certain illnesses if someone sees a doctor and gets a state-issued card. Under the state's current law, people can possess up to two ounces of ready-to-use marijuana and have up to 12 plants in a locked area.
As medical pot cases continue to be considered in state courts, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled last Friday that it's illegal to sell the substance through private shops. (More on this here).
