Middle Belt Or Middlebelt? Signs Make Change
REDFORD TWP. (WWJ/AP) - The name of a road on new signs along a revamped stretch of Detroit-area freeway isn't what motorists are used to seeing, but officials say it's correct.
Signs on I-96 inform motorists that they can exit onto Middle Belt Road. The two-word spelling of Middle Belt is a change from the past, when many referred to the road by one word: Middlebelt.
Michigan Department of Transportation spokeswoman Diane Cross told the Detroit Free Press she didn't know how long signs with the incorrect names were on the freeway, or whether city and county officials would be changing their street signs.
The one-word spelling is found all over the place, including on signs on surface streets and restaurant menus.
The Middle Belt sign isn't the only one with a new spelling. MDOT also updated the Beech-Daly Road sign to include a hyphen.
