Michigan Woman Arrested With Gun Outside White House Gets Time Served
WASHINGTON (WWJ/AP) - A woman arrested for carrying a gun outside the White House in 2014 has been sentenced to time served.
April Debois of Mount Morris, Michigan, pleaded guilty Thursday to a misdemeanor charge of having an unlicensed firearm. The 24-year-old was arrested Nov. 20, 2014, just after President Barack Obama completed a nationally broadcast speech announcing his plan for the U.S. immigration system. She was released Nov. 26, 2014.
Prosecutors said Debois was part of a group protesting along the north fence line of the White House complex when she was spotted by plainclothes agents. She was wearing a purple-and-silver 9mm pistol in a hip holster, according to reports. Although the President was inside the White House at the time of the incident, officials said he was not in danger.
While Debois had a registration and license in Michigan, prosecutors say she was not registered to carry a firearm in Washington. She had been facing a maximum of five years in prison.
At the time of her arrest, authorities identified her as April Lenhart.
