Michigan Will Exempt Nursing Moms From Jury Duty
LANSING (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder has approved a bill that will allow breastfeeding mothers to be exempted from jury duty in Michigan.
The law signed Thursday will allow a nursing mother to request and get an exemption from jury duty if she has a letter from a doctor, certified nurse midwife or lactation consultant saying she's breastfeeding. The exemption would be good for as long as the mother is breastfeeding.
Supporters say it would allow mothers to continue nursing their babies without interrupting court proceedings.
Some legal experts say they support the exemption but say they doubt a state law is needed since courts already have latitude to excuse jurors.
