Michigan To Process Detroit Individual Income Tax Returns
DETROIT (AP) - The Michigan Department of Treasury will process City of Detroit individual income taxes starting in January as part of a partnership aimed at improving efficiency.
The state says Tuesday that Detroit filers will be able to, for the first time, submit their returns electronically.
The transition is part of Detroit's post-bankruptcy management plan and applies to the 2015 tax year and beyond. The change involves resident and non-resident filers.
Taxpayers will be allowed to electronically file a Detroit return along with their State of Michigan Individual Income Tax return. The state says the option will improve accuracy of the returns, provide faster refunds and allow for online notifications.
The Treasury Department says the city will get increased income tax revenues due to better accuracy and expanded enforcement efforts.
