Michigan Teen With Nut Allergy Sues After Amtrak Bars Travel
CASCADE TWP. (WWJ/AP) - A Grand Rapids-area teenager with a nut allergy is suing Amtrak, saying his rights were violated when he was barred from riding the train without an adult.
Thirteen-year-old Noah Joseph wanted to ride from Kalamazoo to Dearborn with his 16-year-old brother to visit their grandmother last summer, but Amtrak said no when their mother tried to buy tickets.
According to their website, Amtrak has a policy that bars kids ages 13 to 15 from traveling without an adult if they have a life-threatening food allergy.
A lawsuit was filed Thursday in federal court in Washington. Noah's mother, Karen Joseph of Cascade Township, says Amtrak's policy violates the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari declined to comment on the lawsuit.
