Michigan Teen Fatally Shot In Rural Indiana
SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a 17-year-old Michigan boy was fatally shot in rural central Indiana as he and his father and three siblings were playing paintball in a wooded area.
Indiana Conservation officers say Brandon J. Spangler of Flushing, Mich., was pronounced dead at the scene southeast of Indianapolis shortly after noon Friday. Investigators said witnesses told them the fatal gunshots were believed to have been fired from a nearby home.
Authorities say a central Indiana man who allegedly shot and killed Spangler said he thought the teen was a coyote in a wooded area on his property. Prosecutors are now trying to determine whether or not 41-year-old Jason Bagley will face charges in the shooting.
Conservation officer Lt. William Browne said Spangler's father had permission to bring his four children to the wooded area for paintball activities.
Bagley said he knows Spangler's father and had given him permission to play paintball on his property, but didn't know he and his four children were on his land Friday. He said he fired shots into woods on his property southeast of Indianapolis after hearing a disturbance he thought was a coyote attack.
