Michigan Tech Wins Great Lakes Invitational
DETROIT (AP) — Michigan Tech goalie Phoenix Copley notched his second straight shutout as Michigan Tech beat Western Michigan 4-0 Sunday in the championship game of the Great Lakes Invitational.
One night after stopping 38 shots in a 4-0 win over Michigan, Copley turned away 32 shots as the Huskies (6-10-3) won their first tourney title in 32 years.
Copley had 14 saves in the second period and 12 in the third. Western Michigan outshot the Huskies 32-22.
Dennis Rix scored in the first period and Blake Hietala in the third for Michigan Tech, which came into the tournament winless in its previous seven games. Tanner Kero and Aaron Pietila scored in the last minute.
Frank Slubowski had 17 saves and Lukas Hafner one for Western Michigan (11-5-2).
