Michigan Tech Students Speaking At Detroit Schools Over Spring Break
HOUGHTON -- Students from the Detroit area travel 500 miles north to Michigan Technological University in Houghton to get a first-class engineering education. This week, some of them are returning to their hometown of Detroit to spend their spring break encouraging younger students to consider engineering as a future career.
Eight members of the Michigan Tech student chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers will visit six middle schools and one high school to talk with students. They will also conduct Family Engineering events at three K-8 schools in Detroit: Paul Robeson/Malcolm X Academy, Mae C. Jemison Academy and Ann Arbor Trail Magnet School.
Family Engineering includes fun, hands-on activities for the whole family, such as 'Mining For Chocolate' and 'Glue Is The Clue.' The program, developed at Michigan Tech and now available across Michigan and nationwide, is designed to engage and inspire young people and their families to consider careers in engineering and science.
The engineering students, their majors and home cities or countries are: NSBE President Ornella Nkurunziza (chemical engineering/Burundi), Ellesse Bess (chemical engineering/Houghton), Reginald Hicks (business/Detroit), Mwihaki Kiema (computer science/Kenya), Darlene Eppes (electrical engineering/Detroit), Clarence Hardwick (undeclared/Detroit), Raquiem Ali (electrical engineering technology/Houghton) and Valencia Rucker (electrical engineering technology/Detroit).
