Michigan Teacher Arraigned On New Sex Charges
GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ/AP) - A West Michigan teacher is facing new charges of inappropriate contact with minors.
Thirty-five-year-old Jamila Williams was arraigned Friday on three counts of criminal sexual conduct. That's in addition to the four similar counts she already faces involving other students.
The new charges involve the touching of a 15-year-old boy and sex with a 16-year-old boy. Police say there are text messages on the victim's phones that back up their claims.
It wasn't clear if the teens are students at Grand Rapids University Preparatory Academy where Williams has been placed on administrative leave.
Williams was charged earlier this month after two male students, ages 15 and 16, told police they had inappropriate contact with the math teacher at multiple locations between March 1 and June 1.
Police said the new allegations came to light after their investigation into Williams became public and they received additional tips about more potential victims.
In all, Williams is charged with one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and six counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. She's due back in Wyoming District Court on July 24 for a probable cause hearing. If convicted as charged, Williams faces up to 15-years in prison.
According to the school's website, Williams has taught in the Grand Rapids Public School system for six years, spending the last four years at University Prep. She has four children and two stepchildren ranging in age between three and 19.
Williams case is being processed in the Wyoming court system because her mother is an assistant city attorney in Grand Rapids.
