Michigan State Police Looking For 100 New Recruits

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Michigan State Police force looking for a few good men and women.

The Metro North Post is hosted an open house Thursday for new recruits who want a close-up look at what state troopers get to experience on a daily basis.

Dozens of hopefuls turned out for an open house Thursday to see what being a Michigan State trooper is all about. 

Michigan State Police captain Monica Yesh says mental and physical fitness are key to being a state police trooper.

"We're looking for people age 21 or older," Yesh said. "People with a clean background, no felony convictions, very small misdemeanor arrests, and a good driving record."

The MSP is looking for more than just troopers for patrol. Specialties like forensics, underwater dive teams, and bomb squads are included in the units that the State Police are trying to fill out.

Trooper Joel Kuhn, an officer with the Underwater Recovery Unit, said in order to be part of a special unit, you need special skills.

"I was a swimmer in high school and a lifeguard and swim instructor after high school," Kuhn said. "I just always enjoyed the water."

"In all of our specialties, something that's very important is teamwork," Kuhn said. "It's one of the things that they look for. In our interview process they definitely look for some illustration of teamwork."

The Michigan State Police hope to have 100 qualified recruits by January 2014.
