Michigan State AD Mark Hollis On Series With Notre Dame: 'It's Gone'

CBS DETROIT - The 2013 regular season of Michigan State would have been perfect if not for a 17-13 loss to then-No. 22 Notre Dame. Thanks to widespread conference realignment, the Spartans will not have to worry about their longtime opponent much longer.
Notre Dame and Michigan State, which have met 77 times, will play each other in 2016 and 2017, but nothing is set in stone beyond that.
Per the Detroit News, Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis said the two teams will not be able to play each other consistently in the future. The series is ending.
"It's gone," Hollis said at the Big Ten's spring meetings, per the News. "We have situations where we can't play them, they have situations where they can't play us, and it's just kind of the roadkill of conference expansion.
"We both want to play each other," Hollis added. "We just can't."
Notre Dame holds a 48-28-1 edge in the series.
Hollis said the teams have plans to meet at a neutral site in 2023. They could also match up again in 2026 and 2027, but those games have not been contracted yet.
