Michigan Starts New Organ Donation License Plate

DETROIT (AP) - Michigan's secretary of state is launching a new license plate designed to encourage people to donate organs and tissues.

Ruth Johnson announced the Donate Life license plates Wednesday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The cost of the plates includes a $25 donation to promote organ donation. You can order the fundraising license plate by mail, fax or at any Secretary of State office. The plate will be mailed to you within 14 business days from the date the plate is ordered.

Life of Michigan President Richard Pietroski says Michigan alone has more than 3,000 waiting for organ transplants. About 3 million people now are on the state's organ donation registry.

Anyone can join the Michigan Organ Donor Registry online or any Secretary of State office. Those who sign up receive a heart logo sticker to place on their driver's license that indicates their wish to be an organ, eye and tissue donor. A new card with a permanent heart emblem is issued at renewal time.
