Michigan Spared Weather Woes For Thanksgiving Travel
DEARBORN (WWJ/AP) - Michigan travelers were finding minimal trouble embarking on their Thanksgiving destinations despite nasty weather spoiling holiday plans elsewhere.
Travelers dealt with few delays or cancellations Wednesday morning at Detroit Metropolitan Airport and on Amtrak routes. An estimated 1.3 million Michigan residents hitting the road, rail or air were finding largely dry conditions but cold temperatures in the state.
That contrasts with bands of ice, sleet and rain barreling over the mid-Atlantic and Northeast - though they weren't causing widespread delays or cancellations beyond the region to other parts of the network.
Roughly a quarter million people will be flying out of Metro Airport during the holiday weekend.
That includes Matthew Calcuterra and his family who are off to Florida.
"My parents have had a condo down there for eight years, and it's actually the first time we've gone," Calcuterra told WWJ's Ron Dewey at the airport. "It's going to be 60s and 70s for the next week-and-a-half, so we should be in good shape."
Olivia and Leslie Figgeroa of Ann Arbor is braving the weather out east to fly to Connecticut. "I'm gonna visit my grandma and my cousins over there, and we're gonna be at my aunt's house for Thanksgiving," said Olivia Figgeroa.
"I haven't been out to the east coast in two years, so, I'm excited," Leslie Figgeroa added.
Pat Wilson of Novi was thankful to be spared travel trouble as she waited to board a Chicago-bound train at Dearborn's Amtrak station. She said the three-generation family train trip was inspired by her 9-year-old granddaughter.
