'Michigan Matters' Focus: Trump & Hillary Courting Black Voters; State In Play
With Donald Trump visiting Flint this week and Hillary Clinton getting back on the campaign trail following her bout with pneumonia, the CBS 62 "Michigan Matters" roundtable debated the presidential contest as it enters the home stretch.
Brandon Dillon, chair of the Michigan Democratic Party, Rocky Raczkowski, who introduced Trump during his recent visit in Diamondale , Cliff Russell, political pundit and host 910 AM, joined Senior Producer/Host Carol Cain in dissecting their political moves and impact on Michigan voters.
The conversation turned heated when Dillon and Raczkowski traded barbs as they talked about the candidates' efforts to reach out to African American voters. The track record of Clinton through the years as it relates to helping blacks, and Trump visiting African American churches in Detroit and Flint was discussed.
Russell also talked about Detroiters and how they are see the contest.
Michigan has voted for the Democratic presidential candidates in every general election since 1988.
The panel talked about the two candidates' efforts to woo young voters.
The roundtable dived in on a few local races too including Cong. Candice Miller trying to unseat Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Anthony Marrocco, and former State Rep. Vickie Barnett trying to do the same with Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson.
And they raised the impact of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to allow straight party ticket voting in Michigan this November.
