'Michigan Matters' Exclusive: Schostak Vs. Johnson -- The Chairmen Battle As Election 2014 Hits Overdrive

(CBS Detroit) - Michigan Republican Chairman Bobby Schostak and Lon Johnson, his counterpart at the state's Democratic Party, went toe to toe on "Michigan Matters" as host Carol Cain peppered the leaders with questions on who will be left standing on Nov. 4 when election 2014 comes to a close.

Michigan voters will be deciding 148 open legislative seats, as well as governor, U.S. Senate, attorney general, secretary of state and numerous other elected positions including Wayne and Macomb County Executives.

Schostak, six years into his job running the GOP, is convinced Gov. Rick Snyder will win rather decidedly over challenger former Cong. Mark Schauer.
Johnson, who has been chairman for two years, talked about using technology to reach voters who stayed home in 2010. He said they energized their base and remain confident Schauer will be in the gubernatorial winner's circle.

The two-party leaders also discussed the red-hot U.S. Senate race between Terri Lynn Land and Cong. Gary Peters to replace retiring Carl Levin. They mentioned it has been among the most expensive in the state's history.

They talked about why each will win.

Judge Mathis Weighs In

Detroit's favorite son, Judge Greg Mathis, host of the "Judge Mathis" show seen weekdays on CW50 at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., appeared on the show to talk about the community programs he is spearheading to help young people in Detroit.

Mathis, whose nationally syndicated program is celebrating its 16th year, began his Mathis Community Center in Detroit 20 years ago. Though he splits his time between Los Angeles and Chicago and Detroit, he considers the Motor City his home.

Mathis was recently tapped by President Barack Obama to offer counsel on helping young African-American men to stay in school and keep on the right path in life.

Mathis also talked about a friendly competition he is spearheading between the Detroit Pistons and Los Angeles Clippers revolving around Thanksgiving Day turkeys he will be giving away.
