Michigan man extradited to Florida to face DUI manslaughter charge
A Michigan man is facing upgraded charges of vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter after a pedestrian was struck and killed in Florida.
Michael Aoun, 34, of Dearborn Heights, was extradited from Michigan on Feb. 24 for the Florida case, St. Petersburg Police Department reported.
A warrant had been issued for his arrest as the GPS monitoring device issued for pretrial release was not kept charged and therefore stopped operating, according to court records from Pinellas County, Florida.
The case involves a Jan. 22 crash in Pineallas County. The victim, Paul Miller, age 37, was working in the median lane putting down flags for a Grand Prix monument.
In the meantime, a Chrysler minivan was operated at a high rate of speed. The driver lost control of the van, crossed into two bicycle lanes, struck a statue, a light pole and the pedestrian.
The initial charges were driving under the influence and reckless driving causing serious bodily injury, records show.
Miller, who was seriously injured, died Jan. 28 at a local hospital.
An arraignment hearing on the new charges is scheduled for March 31 in Sixth Judicial Court of Florida for Pinellas County.
The investigation is continuing.
