Michigan House OKs More Bills To Trim Judgeships
LANSING (AP) - Michigan lawmakers have approved more bills aimed at reducing the number of probate, district and circuit court judgeships statewide through attrition.
The House on Tuesday approved six bills that would make some of the reductions. The most closely contested of the bills passed 85-23. Some of the measures received more than 90 'yes' votes.
Many of the measures are headed to Gov. Rick Snyder because they've already passed the Senate.
The Legislature overall plans to trim an estimated 36 judgeships statewide. That includes legislation already signed by Snyder that eliminates eight judgeships in the state.
Lawmakers originally had sought to reduce more than 40 judgeships. The plan largely follows recommendations made by the State Court Administrative Office.
The court system bills approved Tuesday are House Bills 5071-72 and 5101-04.
