Michigan High-Risk Insurance Pool

Enrollment for a temporary insurance pool covering uninsured people with pre-existing health conditions begins Tuesday. Coverage in the Michigan plan is expected to start Oct. 1.

-Proof of U.S. citizenship and Michigan residency is required. People with pre-existing conditions who have been uninsured for the previous six months will be eligible to enroll, including those denied coverage for health reasons.

-Monthly premiums range from $182 for those between 19 and 24 to $687 a month for those in their early 60s.

-Copays are $20 for a primary care doctor's office visit, $30 for a specialist and $100 for emergency room visits. Generic prescription copays are $10, while brand name drugs typically range from $30 to $50.

-A sample of the preexisting conditions covered include, but are not limited to, AIDS, Alzheimer's, anorexia nervosa, artificial heart valves, brain tumors, cerebral palsy, cirrhosis of the liver, cystic fibrosis, epilepsy, heart disorders, HIV, kidney failure, leukemia, lupus, malignant tumor, mental retardation, morbid obesity, multiple sclerosis, sickle cell anemia and stroke.
