U-M Health and Allied Professionals union reach contract deal

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - The University of Michigan Health system and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals have a tentative three-year agreement, according to a statement issued Tuesday. 

This is the union's first contract agreement with Michigan Medicine and its clinical operation known as U-M Health. A contract ratification vote will be scheduled in the coming weeks. 

"This agreement reflects the expertise and commitment of our highly valued team members. As always, our goal is to attract and retain the best health care professionals who can provide the high quality care we deliver every day to our patients and the communities we serve," David Miller, president of U-M Health, said in the announcement. "Both bargaining teams have worked diligently and collaboratively to ensure that our members' hard work and invaluable contributions to exceptional patient care are properly recognized," UMMAP President Penni Toney said in the announcement.

The union had authorized a strike last fall after the two failed to reach a bargaining agreement. Then in November, the health system and the union reached a memorandum of understanding, which prevented such a strike.   

UMMAP represents about 4,500 employees at U-M Health. Their roles include radiological professionals, physical therapists, medical assistants and social workers.
