Michigan Gun Owners Group Training Kids To Safely Handle Guns
DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - A grassroots gun group is offering free home firearm safety classes for children and their parents in Michigan.
Michigan Gun Owners plans to train 50 children Thursday evening at the Jordan Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit.
While this specific event isn't open to the public, other groups, scout troupes, neighborhood associations, businesses, and churches are invited to contact MGO to schedule a free training session for their kids.
But should children be handling guns?
The group says on its website that all parents — whether they have firearms at home or not — will have different opinions on when they feel is the best time to teach their kids, and how much to teach them, about guns.
MGO says parents should ask themselves: Do the kids understand what a gun is and what is it used for? Do they understand the difference between a real gun and a toy gun? Can they hold the gun up and shoot it safely? Do they understand the safety rules?
"If you can answer yes to these questions they are probably ready," the group concludes.
MGO recently made news when the group sued Ann Arbor Public Schools over new policies keeping guns out of schools.
