Michigan Great Lakes Virtual Academy Enrolling Students for 2013-14
MANISTEE -- Michigan Great Lakes Virtual Academy, an online public school authorized by Manistee Area Public Schools, has been approved by the Michigan Department of Education and is now enrolling students in grades K-12 for the 2013-2014 school year. MGLVA will use the K12 curriculum to offer Michigan students a high quality, individualized learning experience delivered by Michigan-certified teachers.
"Students in Michigan deserve the best possible public education and we're excited to provide them with an option that tailors the learning environment to suit their individual needs," said John Chandler, Superintendent of Manistee Area Public Schools. "With MGLVA, students will have access to a quality education that also allows for flexibility, something that has the potential to really impact a child's development in a positive way."
To help parents and children learn more about the program, MGLVA will host a variety of free events in communities across the state, as well as online information sessions, to demonstrate the online program and offer the opportunity to speak with school representatives about how students can succeed at MGLVA.

"In addition to greater academic success, an individualized learning experience can also generate confidence for a young person and inspire independence, both in school and beyond," says David Ohman, MGLVA Board Chair. "I am glad to see MAPS take the lead in supporting this emerging type of education. It's important for families to understand that if traditional schools don't seem to be working for your child, there are other options available where they might excel."
Students who enroll in MGLVA will receive the award-winning academic program developed by K12 Inc. (NYSE: LRN), which includes engaging web-based lessons along with instructional materials – books, videos, CDs and other hands-on tools and resources – which are shipped directly to each student's home. MGLVA will provide courses in English/Language Arts, Math, Science, History, Music and Art for students in grades K-8, while the high school program will offer students a catalog of more than 150 courses, including multiple curriculum options to meet the needs of a variety of learners.
MGLVA teachers will provide instruction, guidance and support and regularly interact with students and parents via email, web-based classrooms, online discussions, phone and face-to-face meetings. They'll strive to collaborate with parents to develop an Individualized Learning Plan to aid student academic success and meet goals set by parents, students and teachers. MGLVA students will be provided with a variety of opportunities for social activities and engagement. Teachers will organize outings and other school activities, and students will have access to a national network of 100+ clubs that cover a wide variety of interests like Lego, chess, Spanish, American Girls®, photography, guitar, debate and flamenco dance.
